Course 4 - Re-teaching math while teaching chemistry
Course Description
How do you support students who don’t have the algebra skills required to master chemistry content? In this module, we will explore how to re-teach these algebra skills needed to master important chemistry topics, such as stoichiometry, the gas laws and acids and bases. First-year Corps Members are the target learners for this course.
Knowledge-Skills-mindset
By taking this course, teachers will develop the following:
Knowledge:
-Teachers are familiar with the chemistry concepts that require algebra skills and what these algebra skills are.
-Teachers understand the purpose of re-teaching algebra skills to their chemistry students.
Skills:
-Determine which algebra skills need re-teaching amongst their students.
-Collaborate with other teachers, specifically math and science teachers, on how to strengthen the targeted algebra skills amongst students.
-Re-teach the targeted algebra skills so that students are able to master the chemistry content.
Mindset:
-Recognize that chemistry requires strong algebra skills and that providing support for students who struggle with algebra is essential in creating a level playing field for all who want to succeed in chemistry.
-Recognize that the insight and collaboration of other teachers, specifically math and science teachers, is instrumental in strengthening students’ algebra skills.
