Chemistry Content Immersion:
Benefits and Risks of Nuclear Power
The topic of nuclear power is one in which it is difficult to bifurcate the scientific concepts from the human experience - both that of scientific discovery and of the ways science intersects with social, economic, and political factors. In this module, teachers will prepare for instruction by deepening their own critical consciousness about these intersections centered on the topic of the benefits and risks of nuclear power.
By taking this course, teachers will develop the following:
- Teachers are knowledgeable of key concepts in nuclear reactions.
- Teachers are aware of multiple perspectives and social, economic, and political factors related to the use of nuclear power in the United States.
- Teachers believe that all students deserve the right to develop a deep understanding of science as a way of knowing, become both confident consumers and producers of scientific knowledge, and develop agency to drive improvements in the local and global community through the application of science and technology.
